Forty venues. One iconic Australian hospitality group.
With more than forty hotels and pubs across New South Wales, Laundy Hotels is one of Australia's largest hospitality groups. Its portfolio spans traditional pubs, destination venues and modern hotels, serving millions of guests each year.
To support continued growth, Laundy Hotels embarked on a digital transformation. The goal was to create a more consistent digital experience across the portfolio, improve SEO and booking performance, simplify website management and make it easier for customers to discover and engage with each venue.
One design system. Distinct identities for forty venues.
The challenge was to create a consistent digital platform across the group without losing the individual character of each venue. Every site needed to support the core hospitality journey: finding a venue, checking opening hours, viewing menus, exploring events and making a booking, while remaining easy to manage at scale.
We developed a shared design system and component library that could be deployed across the entire portfolio. Reusable content blocks, templates and functionality remain consistent, while each venue's branding, typography, colour palette and imagery create a distinct identity. The result is a platform that feels tailored to every venue while being managed through a single, scalable framework.
Four problems we had to solve.
Colour palette duplication.
Each venue needed unique theme colours without duplicating style guides. We resolved it with CSS variables, defining colour scope globally and applying it consistently across sites.
Website creation at scale.
Standing up forty distinct sites was a considerable task. A bash script with venue-specific inputs automated theme generation, multisite setup, database creation, and seeding a new site in under five minutes.
Future expansion.
The design system was built to flex as new venues join the group. Effortless integration of new branding, no rebuild required.
Commercial viability.
Significant upfront investment in the design system framework, paid back through automation and centralisation. New sites design, build and deploy at a fraction of the original cost.
Leveraging Drupal's multisite features.
Once the design system was established, the focus shifted to delivering functionality consistently across the entire portfolio. Using Drupal's multisite architecture, we managed more than forty websites from a single codebase, allowing new features, improvements and updates to be rolled out efficiently across the group.
Each venue maintains its own database, content and configuration, preserving operational independence, while themes, modules and core code are managed centrally. Security patches, platform enhancements and new functionality can be deployed across every site simultaneously, reducing maintenance overhead and ensuring the portfolio evolves together.
Consistent features across every venue.
A shared set of templates and components powers every venue, including homepage banners, venue highlights, menus, contact pages and promotional content. Core functionality remains consistent across the portfolio, while each venue retains its own identity.
Bookings and enquiries are integrated through SevenRooms, iVvy and Sprout, creating a seamless customer journey and a consistent experience across the entire Laundy Hotels group.
